The role of the Nimishillen Township Fire Department has changed dramatically since the department was founded in 1958 with volunteer citizen fire fighters and a used pump truck. Today’s needs and increased requests for additional services have required the department to
redefine its mission to include the delivery of emergency medical and rescue services. In the beginning, fire fighters were trained to administer first aid, CPR and other basic life support functions. Today, NTFD fire fighters are highly trained and required to perform a wide variety of pre-hospital care procedures. Working from three modern stations, the highly trained men and women of the department responded to 1,350 calls in 2008 with an average response time of about 4 minutes. The calls for emergency medical service also includes motor vehicle accidents. The number of emergency calls has gone from 975 in 1998 to 1,350 in 2008, an increase of 38%. We now make nearly 4 emergency runs every day, and the forecast is for that number to continue to increase.
